Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21.
Treasure has more than one meaning, it can be something precious, or something of value, or something that has quality and beauty. All these have wonderful meaning. But the question is where are you storing your treasure?
Now what do I mean by storing treasure?
Mathew 6:19 new living translation says “don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal”.
Storing up treasure is what you acquire for yourself with what you have. It could time, money, resources etc.
Many people use their time to acquire earthly possession. While few people use their time to gather up things for the eternal purpose What Do you spend your time on?
Money is one of the most valuable possessions on earth; I’ve heard it said many a times that time is money. Because the hours you put in works may determine the outcome of your wages or salary. Now, if you made all the money you want to make on earth, and you’re not storing up eternal treasure, you’re already laying up earthly treasure which will one day be destroyed. Remember a day is coming; you’ll give an account of everything given to you by God.
Treasure can be stored only two places:
- On Earth
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.
Many people are too concern and focus about laying up treasure on earth whereby they spend all their time and money working for earthly possessions and mundane things. Beloved, it will be wrong for us to be too concern about earthy gain which will one day be forgotten and perish.
Mark 8:36 KJV
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Anything acquire for the earth will not last long, no matter how many years it stays, it will one day perish. Earthly possessions are temporal, that’s why we must not lay up our treasures for worldly use. The most expensive cars, houses, mansions, jewelries will one day perish and be forgotten. But kindness shown towards that widow, the orphan, the less privilege, to the needy, to the support of kingdom work, will never be forgotten. It will speak till eternity.
For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. Hebrews 6:10.
When a man lays treasures for worldly sake, it makes him to lose focus on eternity. For where his treasure is, there will his heart be. The things that are seen will come and go but the things that are eternal will be there forever.
- In Heaven.
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
Heavenly treasures are eternal. They can neither rust nor perish. They are always shinning, glowing, clean and eternal. Unlike earthy treasure that get rust and dirty with time.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18.
Earthly possession gives temporal joy while eternal treasure gives everlasting Joy. Think of what will give you everlasting Joy, happiness, victory, peace, gladness. Dancing and rejoicing.
Don’t look at those things you want to acquire for earthly use. Rather let your mind be focused on the things that are eternal. Earth will only reward you for what you acquire for the earth, while God will reward you for what you sow for the sake of His kingdom.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8.
Beloved, your time, money, resources all belongs to God, you are just a caretaker of them, use them wisely and mostly for the kingdom sake so that you can get your reward. And at the end, nobody can take away your crown. God Bless You.
